Review By: Steve Flannery Marilla Ness is one of England's most successful Christian artists. In an age of praise and worship innovation, her soothing vibrato and gentle, acoustic-guitar-led music hearken back a few decades to simpler days. Though the songs range from the classic hymn "Nearer My God to Thee" to The Choir's "Beautiful Scandalous Night," the serene tempo and easy-listening style remain fairly constant. Notable exceptions are the popular praise chorus "Shout to the Lord," with its lively background vocals, and "Don't Give Up on Me," an up-tempo plea for God's patience. Other lyrics are devotional or treat themes such as Mary's experiences as Jesus' mother ("Gently She Carried") and God's Creation and ongoing work in His people ("God of the Earth"). Though Ness first achieved success in the Catholic market, this record - and most of her others - are clearly aimed at, and should appeal to, Christians of all traditions. Recommend Resting in Love to older listeners and anyone else looking for peaceful, uplifting inspirational music. Review By: Geoff Howlett Album number 10 finds Marilla Ness, ministering in song the only way she knows how. With gentle, easy listening tunes she delivers 12 beautiful tracks in typical Marilla fashion. From a personal point of view I can only tell you of the spiritual joy and uplifting her previous releases have given to various members of my own family. Here, using songs written by the likes of Tom Paxton, Michael Cameron and Robin Mark, her voice is only made more outstanding by the excellent music backing. Steve Hindalong is a name from the CCM past, and his "Beautiful Scandalous Night" is an early highlight. When I heard that other writing credits included ex-Pogue Shane McGowen, I was a little worried. However, any fears were quickly squashed by the exquisite "You're the One". "Don't Give Up On Me", "Gently She Carried", "I Will Love You", are just 3 more of a track listing of which I can find no fault. Long may her wonderful ministry continue. (10/10). |
